There were many games held throughout the ancient Greek culture. Each city in ancient Greece had its own version of the games that were played during those times. The first official Olympics began in 776 BC and lasted until 39th century BC. There were many popular games held in ancient Greece, including; wrestling, boxing, archery, foot racing, javelin throwing, pole vaulting, discus throwing, wrestling, and running. These games served to showcase the athletes’ physical strength and skill. The athletes competed in various events including long jump, short jump, discus throw, and sprint. The winners were the athletes who threw the most amount of weight over the longest distance in these events.
The original purpose of these games was to determine who had the greatest physical strength and endurance. These games were also used to teach the people about justice. Many different gods participated in these competitions. These included; Apollo, Ares, Athena, Artemis, Dionysus, Heracles, Poseidon, and Zeus. There was also Zeus who was the god of kingship and also the chief of all Olympian gods. He made sure that the games were played on a regular basis. These games were a great source of inspiration for the people.
Games in ancient Greece were treated as nothing less than a religious festival.
